A Life Carved in Stone

Rose Popper was born in Buffalo, New York and now resides in Pendleton, a suburb of Buffalo.  Rose Popper is an award-winning Buffalo artist and educator and longtime member of the Buffalo Society of Artists.

She received her Master’s Degree from the State University of New York at Albany and also studied at the University of Notre Dame, the Art Institute of Chicago and   the University of Colorado at Boulder.  She received her BFA from the State University of New York at Buffalo.

Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and Canada and has been included in national art exhibitions.  Regionally, she exhibited her sculptures in numerous galleries including the Schweinfurth Art Center, Thousand Islands Art Center, Cooperstown National Exhibitions, Castellani Art Museum, Burchfield Penney Art Center, Albright-Knox Member’s Gallery, Hallwalls, Carnegie Art Center and the Kenan Center.  Her work is included in numerous private collections.  Popper’s work is included in the permanent collection of the Burchfield Penney Art Center, Buffalo, NY.
Popper taught art at both the elementary and secondary levels in public schools in Portage, Indiana and in Buffalo, New York.  After teaching over 22 years in the Buffalo Public Schools, she retired in 2010.  She was also a free-lance prototype sculptor for Fisher-Price Toys in East Aurora, New York from 1988 to 1991 and worked as an Artist-in-Residence at Artpark, Lewiston, NY.
As an accomplished sculptor, Popper primarily carves in stone and also works in clay.  Many of her sculptures are cast in bronze. Popper’s sculptures are derived from her close observations of nature, exploring shapes, lines and textures, whether in flux, vibrating, or motionless.  She strives to seize a stilled-metamorphosis, capturing the form changing from one shape or structure into another, prolonging the process at the moment of transformation.
“I strive to seize a stilled-metamorphosis, capturing the form changing from one shape or structure into another, prolonging the process at the moment of transformation.”
